Ingredients

  • Cupcakes:

    • 12-24 baked cupcakes, any flavor

  • Frosting:

    • 2-3 cups buttercream frosting, any color

  • “Arrow” Sticks:

    • Wooden skewers or pretzel sticks

  • Edible Paper or Fondant for Arrowheads/Fletching:

    • Edible paper (rice paper, wafer paper)

    • or Colored fondant

  • Edible “String” for Bows:

    • Licorice strips, cut into 2-inch lengths

  • “Bow” Sticks:

    • Small pretzel sticks

    • or Toothpicks

  • Edible Glue or Frosting for adhering:

    • Small amount of frosting or edible glue

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cupcakes: Bake or purchase your favorite cupcakes and let them cool completely.

  2. Frost the Cupcakes: Frost each cupcake with a generous swirl of buttercream frosting. Use any color you like, but consider using a color that will make the bow and arrow decorations stand out.

  3. Create the “Arrow” Shafts: If using wooden skewers, be sure to break or trim them so they are only a few inches long so they do not pose a choking hazard. If using pretzel sticks, no preparation is needed.

  4. Create the “Arrowheads and Fletching”:

    • Edible Paper: Cut small arrowheads and fletching (the feathered part of the arrow) from the edible paper using scissors or a craft knife.

    • Fondant: Roll out colored fondant and cut out the arrowhead and fletching using scissors or a craft knife.

  5. Assemble the Arrows: Carefully attach the arrowheads and fletching to the end of the pretzel or skewer sticks using a dab of frosting or edible glue. Let the “arrows” dry a little so they stay together.

  6. Create the Bow:

    • Bend the Pretzel Stick: If using a pretzel stick, carefully bend it into a gentle bow shape. If using a toothpick you can leave as is.

    • Attach the String: Attach each end of the licorice piece “string” to the ends of the “bow” with a dot of frosting or edible glue. This will create a bow shape with the edible string pulled taut. Let the bow set.

  7. Decorate the Cupcakes:

    • Gently push a finished “arrow” into the frosted cupcake, angling it slightly for visual appeal.

    • Carefully place the bow in front of or next to the arrow, tucking the ends into the frosting. Make sure the string is visible so it’s clear that it is a bow.

  8. Repeat: Repeat the above steps to decorate each cupcake with a bow and arrow.

  9. Serve: Display your Bow & Arrow Cupcakes and enjoy!

Notes

  • Cupcake Base: Use your favorite cupcake recipe or store-bought cupcakes.

  • Frosting: Use a stiff frosting like buttercream for easy decorating and so that it holds the decorations well.

  • Edible Paper: Edible paper is easy to cut into shapes and adheres well. It is available in many colors.

  • Fondant: Fondant can create more 3D arrowheads and fletching. Use colored fondant to add variety.

  • Pretzel Sticks: Use regular pretzel sticks for a more rustic look. If you are making for very small children you may want to make sure they are not too salty.

  • Wooden Skewers: Trim wooden skewers before use for safety, as the pointy ends could be a choking hazard for small children.

  • Licorice: Choose a licorice type that works well as an edible “string.” You can use a red or black licorice for this. You can use other types of flat candy for this as well, just make sure they are flexible.

  • Edible Glue: You can also use melted candy melts as edible glue.

  • Adaptations: Feel free to use different colors or decorating styles for your cupcakes and decorations to match your theme.

  • Safety: Be mindful of small children when using wooden skewers or small decorations.

  • Storage: Store the decorated cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days. Avoid refrigerating if possible as the paper decorations can become soggy.
